Who was Mies van der Rohe?

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 to 1969) was a German-American architect, born in Aachen and regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. He was the last director of the Bauhaus, from 1930 until it closed in 1933, and in 1938 he moved to Chicago to head the architecture school at what became the Illinois Institute of Technology.

His best-known furniture came out of two buildings: the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona exposition and the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, completed in 1930. The Barcelona pieces take their name from the first; the Brno chair takes its name from the city of the second.

For the movement he led, see Bauhaus furniture. For his contemporaries, see Le Corbusier furniture and Florence Knoll furniture, who studied under him in Chicago.

Which piece for which room

What the numbers show

The chair and the sofa are one design at two widths. Both are 76 cm deep and 80 cm high with a 44 cm seat; the sofa is 55 cm wider. A chair and a sofa placed together line up exactly.

The stool sits 4.5 cm below the chair seat. At 39.5 cm it works as a footstool for the chair. The chair and stool together come to GBP 1,374.00.

The 3 seater bench adds 63 cm for GBP 435. At 195 cm against 132 cm, it is almost the length of the daybed, which is 1 cm longer but 44 cm deeper.

Delivery is 12 to 16 weeks for most pieces, according to their product pages. Some colourways may show faster dispatch.
