Ash top or leather seat: two kinds of bench
The six benches in this collection fall into two groups, and the difference is the seat. Two are ash-top benches. Four are leather benches sold by the number of seats.
The ash-top pair are the lowest pieces here. The George Nelson Bench has an ash top on lacquered black ash legs, 35 cm high, in 122 or 152 cm lengths. The second ash-top bench stands on stainless steel legs, 39 cm high, in 153 or 183 cm lengths.
The leather benches sit higher, at 41 to 44 cm. The Barcelona 2 seater and 3 Seater Benches, credited to Mies van der Rohe, have a leather seat on real leather belt straps and stainless steel legs. The three-seat version lists a solid walnut base, and the two-seat version comes in walnut or black lacquered versions. The other leather bench has a solid wood frame inside its cover and a stainless steel base, in two-seat and three-seat lengths.
Heights and lengths: where each bench fits
Benches are typically about 46 to 51 cm high, though the height depends on use. Every bench here is lower, from 35 cm on the George Nelson Bench to 44 cm on the other leather bench, in both lengths. If a bench is for a dining table, compare its height with the seat height of your dining chairs before you order.
Length per seat differs between the leather designs. The Barcelona benches allow about 65 cm for each named seat: 132 cm for two and 195 cm for three. The other leather bench allows about 48 to 51 cm: 96 cm for two and 153 cm for three. So the Barcelona three-seat bench is the longest piece here, and the two-seat leather bench at 96 cm the shortest.
The ash-top benches are not sold by seat count. Their four lengths, 122 to 183 cm, sit between those two extremes. Depths across the collection run from 47 to 53 cm. For lower, single seats, see the modern stool collection, and for other seating, the chair collection.
Which benches come in leather, and in which colours?
Four of the six. The Barcelona 2 seater Bench comes in black or white leather, and the Barcelona 3 Seater Bench in black, mocha, deep red or tan. The two-seat bench on a stainless steel base comes in black, in premium or Italian leather, and the three-seat version in black or cream. The two ash-top benches have no upholstery.
Do the benches arrive assembled?
The four leather benches arrive fully assembled. The two ash-top benches arrive with their legs to be fitted to the top, and their product pages list no separate instructions. Each product page states its assembly line in the specification, so check the version you want before you order.
How large are the boxes?
The packed sizes follow the bench lengths. The George Nelson Bench packs flat, 14.5 cm high, in boxes 125 or 155 cm long. The Barcelona 3 Seater Bench packs into a box 207 cm long and 20 cm high, and the black Barcelona 2 seater into one 135 cm long. The three-seat leather bench on a stainless steel base ships 157 cm long and 45 cm high. Check doorways and stairs for the longer boxes.
How do I clean the benches?
Each product page lists its own care line. The two ash-top benches list dusting. The leather benches list dusting and a leather cleaner, with a vacuum listed for care. The care line can differ between versions of the same bench, so check it on the version you buy.
Are the benches in stock?
Some pieces and finishes are held in stock for faster dispatch, including two Barcelona 2 seater versions and the black three-seat leather bench on a stainless steel base. Each product page shows its current lead time under the Add to Cart button, and it can change with the finish you choose, so check the version you want before you order.
Who designed these benches?
The product pages credit the George Nelson Bench to George Nelson and the Barcelona benches to Mies van der Rohe. These are reproductions: each product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer or associated parties. Customer support can answer questions about a specific bench before you order.
