Who was Poul Kjærholm?
Poul Kjærholm (1929 to 1980) was a Danish furniture designer, born in Østervrå. He trained as a cabinetmaker, then studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he was taught by Hans Wegner, graduating in 1952.
Unlike most Danish designers of his generation, he chose steel as his main material, pairing it with leather, cane, wood and marble. His lounge chair of the mid-1950s won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957, and he later taught at the Royal Danish Academy, becoming a professor there in 1976.
