Who was Pierre Paulin?
Pierre Paulin (1927 to 2009) was a French furniture and interior designer, born in Paris. In 1958 he began working with a Dutch furniture manufacturer, and through the 1960s he produced the chairs he is best known for, including the Mushroom, Tongue and Ribbon chairs.
His signature idea was to wrap a chair in stretch fabric so that its steel and wood structure disappeared, leaving a single soft shape. He later designed interiors at the Élysée Palace for Presidents Pompidou and Mitterrand. He died in Montpellier in 2009.
Low and wide, or higher and lighter?
Low and wide. The Pacha Style Lounge Chair is 80 cm wide and 69 cm high, and the Pacha Style Armchair is 100 cm wide and 65 cm high. Both are low and deep, and both product pages describe them as great as a pair. If you want a taller back, compare the modern high armchairs.
Higher and lighter. The Orange Slice Chair is the tallest of the three at 77 cm and the only one with a published seat height, 46.5 cm. At 18 kg it is also the lightest, and it is the only one covered in wool.
The one that turns. The Pacha Style Armchair is the only chair here on a swivel base, with brushed gold anodised legs and a bouclé cover. For more upholstered seating from the same era, see Mario Bellini, or browse all modern lounge chairs.

Who was Pierre Paulin?
Pierre Paulin (1927 to 2009) was a French furniture and interior designer, born in Paris. He began working with a Dutch furniture manufacturer in 1958, and in the 1960s he designed the sculptural, fabric-covered chairs he is best known for. He also designed interiors at the Élysée Palace for two French presidents.
What is Pierre Paulin known for?
He is known for lounge chairs that look like one soft, continuous shape. He covered his chairs in stretch fabric so the frame inside could not be seen, which made them read as sculpture rather than upholstered furniture. His best-known chairs from the 1960s include the Mushroom, Tongue and Ribbon chairs.
What is a Pierre Paulin style chair?
It is a reproduction of one of his lounge chair designs. It is sold as a reproduction, and every Mobelaris product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer. This collection holds three chairs, two on hardwood frames and one in wool, from GBP 579.50.
What is the difference between the two hardwood-framed chairs?
Size, cover and movement. The Pacha Style Lounge Chair is 80 cm wide, weighs 26 kg and sits on a black powder-coated base, from GBP 694.50. The Pacha Style Armchair is 100 cm wide, weighs 32 kg, has a bouclé cover and turns on a swivel base, from GBP 819.50. Both use high-density foam.
Which chair swivels?
Only the Pacha Style Armchair. Its product page lists a swivel function base with brushed gold anodised legs. The Pacha Style Lounge Chair sits on a fixed black powder-coated base, and the Orange Slice Chair on a fixed stainless steel base. If a chair that turns matters to you, the armchair is the one to choose.
How big are the chairs?
The Pacha Style Lounge Chair is 80 cm wide, 84 cm deep and 69 cm high. The Pacha Style Armchair is 100 cm wide, 85 cm deep and 65 cm high. The Orange Slice Chair is 84 cm wide, 74 cm deep and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 46.5 cm. Check doorways before ordering the 100 cm armchair.
When were these designs created?
Paulin designed the Pacha lounge chair in 1975, and the Orange Slice chair in 1960, according to the product pages and published design histories. The Orange Slice therefore dates from his first years with his Dutch manufacturer, while the Pacha belongs to the 1970s, the decade in which he began his interior work at the Élysée Palace.
Do the chairs need assembling?
No. All three product pages state that the chairs are delivered fully assembled, so there is nothing to build on arrival. The largest is the Pacha Style Armchair, which measures 104 cm by 89 cm by 69 cm packed, so check your door and hallway widths before it is delivered.
How long is delivery?
All three chairs take 12 to 16 weeks, according to their product pages, and the Orange Slice Chair page also shows express delivery options. Each product page shows its own estimate under the Add to Cart button, and timings are confirmed by email once the order is placed.
What warranty do the chairs have?
Each of the three chairs lists a five-year warranty in its product specification. The lounge chair, the armchair and the Orange Slice Chair share the same term, so a mixed pair is covered for the same period. Check the product page for the full terms before ordering.
