How much room does a modern armchair need?
The 20 armchairs on this page measure 76 to 110 cm wide and 62 to 104 cm deep. That is a 34 cm spread in width alone, so start with the space, then the look. Grouped by width:
Width | Armchairs | Depth (cm) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
76 to 80 cm | LC2 Style Petit Confort Armchair, LC2 Style Armchair, PK31 Armchair, GE 290 Plank Chair, Peacock Chair - PP550, Pelican Chair | 65 to 82 | 15 to 33 |
82 to 93 cm | 2322 Armchair, Mogensen 2122 Arm Chair, 1919 Chair, Bibendum Chair, Comfort Style Lounge Sofa, and two leather armchairs on stainless steel bases | 79 to 104 | 20 to 40 |
95 to 110 cm | LC3 Style Grand Confort Armchair and its Special Edition, Womb Chair in wool and in bouclé, Camaleonda Style Lounge Sofa, Platner Lounge Chair, Windsor Chair | 62 to 97 | 26 to 41 |
Depth is the figure most often missed. The deepest piece, a leather armchair on a stainless steel base, is 83 cm wide but 104 cm deep, while the 95 cm Platner Lounge Chair is only 62 cm deep. Measure the walkway in front of the chair as well as the wall behind it. The Peacock Chair is the outlier in height: at 110 cm tall it is the lightest here, at 15 kg, but its back stands well above every other chair. For more high-backed pieces, see the high armchairs.
How each armchair sits: seat height, frame and cover
Thirteen of the 20 list a seat height, and they run from 36 to 50 cm. That 14 cm spread on one page matters more than the label, so compare seat heights before you choose. For other types of seat, see the full chair collection.
Low seats from 36 to 41.5 cm
Six of the 13 sit at 41.5 cm or below. The Peacock Chair is lowest at 36 cm and the Comfort Style Lounge Sofa follows at 38 cm. The PK31 Armchair and the Bibendum Chair sit at 40.5 cm, the Pelican Chair at 41 cm and the Windsor Chair at 41.5 cm. Ten of the 20 are also tagged as lounge chairs; the lounge chair collection gathers more of that type.
Higher seats from 46 to 50 cm
Five sit at 46 cm or above. The 2322 Armchair and the 1919 Chair are highest at 50 cm, the Platner Lounge Chair is 48 cm, the Mogensen 2122 Arm Chair 47 cm, and the leather armchair 104 cm deep sits at 46 cm. The Womb Chair and the leather armchair 82 cm wide sit between the two groups at 43.5 cm.
Steel, wood or foam underneath
Four chairs sit in a polished or powder-coated steel frame: the two LC2 Style chairs and the two LC3 Style chairs, in the style of Le Corbusier. Six stand on solid wood or wooden legs, from the ash GE 290 Plank Chair to the walnut-legged 1919 Chair. The Comfort Style and Camaleonda Style lounge pieces are polyurethane foam throughout, and the Camaleonda Style is part of the same family as the Mario Bellini sofas.
Which modern armchairs suit a small room?
The narrowest are 76 to 78 cm wide. The LC2 Style Petit Confort Armchair measures 76 × 70 cm, the LC2 Style Armchair 78 × 70 cm and the PK31 Armchair 76 × 74 cm. The Peacock Chair is 78 × 65 cm, but stands 110 cm tall. For a compact room, check depth as well as width: the GE 290 Plank Chair is 77 cm wide but 82 cm deep.
Will an armchair fit through my door?
Check the packing size on the product page against your narrowest door and hallway. The largest boxes here are the Windsor Chair at 113 × 95 × 69 cm, the Womb Chair at 103 × 92 × 98 cm and the Camaleonda Style Lounge Sofa at 100 × 100 × 74 cm. The LC2 Style Armchair packs smallest, at 79 × 72 × 70 cm. The Platner Lounge Chair ships in two boxes.
How heavy are these armchairs?
They weigh 15 to 41 kg. The Peacock Chair is lightest at 15 kg, followed by the Comfort Style Lounge Sofa at 20 kg and the LC2 Style Armchair at 22 kg. The heaviest are the Camaleonda Style Lounge Sofa at 41 kg, the 1919 Chair at 40 kg and the Windsor Chair at 38 kg. Check the weight against the route into the room, especially stairs.
Do the armchairs need assembling?
Seventeen of the 20 are listed as fully assembled or needing no assembly, including both Womb Chairs, the Pelican Chair and the PK31. The LC3 Style Grand Confort Armchair needs its feet fitted, while its Special Edition arrives fully assembled. The Platner Lounge Chair and the 1919 Chair come with instructions, so check their product pages before delivery.
Leather or fabric: what covers are available?
Twelve of the 20 are leather on the finish shown in the grid, described on their pages as Italian, premium, aniline or waxy leather. Seven are wool, bouclé or Alcantara fabric, and the Peacock Chair has a reed cord seat. Several pieces come in more than one cover, such as the Womb Chair in wool or bouclé. Most leather pages suggest dusting and a leather cleaner; most wool and bouclé pages suggest vacuuming.
Can I match an armchair to a sofa or ottoman?
Some product pages suggest a partner. The Camaleonda Style Lounge Sofa page suggests the Camaleonda ottoman and corner sofa, and the bouclé Womb Chair page suggests its ottoman. Six leather armchairs, including the PK31, the 2322 Armchair and the Windsor Chair, are described as great as a pair. If you are pairing a chair with a sofa you already own, compare its listed seat height with the sofa's.
Which armchairs have a wooden frame or legs?
Six of the 20. The GE 290 Plank Chair is American ash throughout, the Peacock Chair is solid wood with a reed cord seat, and the Pelican Chair stands on ash legs. The Mogensen 2122 Arm Chair and the 2322 Armchair have solid wood frames, and the 1919 Chair stands on walnut legs. The rest sit on steel frames, steel legs, a wire base or foam.
What is the difference between an armchair and a lounge chair?
On this site the two overlap. Ten of the 20 armchairs here are also tagged as lounge chairs. This page gathers chairs sold as armchairs, while the modern lounge chair and high armchair collections each have their own pages. If you are comparing low, deep chairs for a living room, check all three.
How do I check the lead time for an armchair?
Each product page shows its current lead time under the Add to Cart button. It can change with the cover or colour you choose, so check the version you want before you plan delivery. Customer support can confirm timing for a specific piece.
Who designed these armchairs?
The product pages credit pieces to Le Corbusier, Eero Saarinen, Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, Poul Kjærholm, Børge Mogensen, Warren Platner, Mario Bellini and Michel Ducaroy. These are reproductions: each product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer or associated parties.
