Modern Designer Desks

A desk is one of the most functional pieces of furniture in a home or office — and one of the most visually dominant, because it occupies a significant footprint and is used for extended periods. Getting the proportions right matters ergonomically as much as aesthetically: standard desk height is...

How much desk do you need?

Start with the space: measure the wall or alcove the desk will stand in, and how far it can come into the room. The 15 desks in this collection run from 80 to 187 cm wide and from 45 to 93.5 cm deep, so the footprint narrows the choice quickly.

For a hallway, landing or bedroom corner. The two Stretto desks are only 45 cm deep, the shallowest here, and the small one is 80 cm wide. They suit a laptop and a lamp rather than a large monitor set-up.

For a home office. Eight of the desks are 120 to 150 cm wide and 60 to 77.5 cm deep, which leaves room for a screen and paperwork. The product pages for the Theo and Nord desks say they take two monitors.

For a large study or a shared workspace. The Nyhavn, the 180 cm walnut desk and the CH110 are 170 to 187 cm wide and 80 to 93.5 cm deep. They weigh 55 to 66.2 kg, so check the route into the room.

Drawers, shelves or an open frame?

Storage is the second decision, and it changes how the desk looks as much as what it holds.

Drawers for a tidy surface. The Leon desk has the most drawers, with four drawers and a curved tambour door over a shelf. The Claus desk has three drawers, the Nord two, and the Deco one drawer split into two sections.

Open shelves and frames for a lighter look. The Stretto desks keep their storage open below the top, and the Finn desk has a shelf. The Quinn and CH110 list no storage at all, which keeps the frame clean but means planning drawers or a cabinet elsewhere.

Glass for a floating look. The Bendtsen desk has a 19 mm tempered glass top over walnut veneer drawers, and its product page describes compartments for hiding cables.

All 15 specifications list both commercial and residential use, so the same desk can go into a home office or a small business.
