Designer Pendant Lights

Pendant lighting defines the character of a room more than almost any other fixture. Positioned correctly — hung 65–75 cm above a dining table surface, or 200–210 cm from floor level in a reception area — a single pendant organises the visual space beneath it and transforms how the room reads after...

Eight pendants side by side

The pendants here differ most in size and weight, and those two figures decide where each one works. This table sets eight of them side by side, smallest shade first. Every figure comes from the product's own specification.

Shades adjust, arms are fixed length

Size is a range, not a single figure. Several pendants come in more than one size. The Bubble lamp is offered in small, medium, large and extra large, the Artichoke lamp in 48, 60, 72 and 84 cm, and the Melt pendant in small and large. The figures above are for the size named.

The PH 5 comes in two sizes. The Mini is 30 cm across and weighs 1 kg; the full size is 50 cm across and weighs 4 kg. Both take the same E27 golf ball bulb.

The widest piece is a ceiling lamp, not a drop. The three-arm ceiling lamp spans 210 cm and weighs 11 kg, more than twice the Artichoke lamp. Its shades turn, but its arms do not change length, so measure the room before you choose it.

Before the electrician arrives

All eight pendants in the table list an electrician as advised or recommended in their specification. A little planning makes the visit shorter.

Decide the drop first. Six of the eight come with a 180 cm cable that is fully adjustable, and the PH 5 pendant's page says the cable can be shortened during installation. Agree the height you want before the cable is cut. The Artichoke lamp adjusts between 85 cm and 194 cm instead.

Have the bulb ready. None of the eight includes a bulb. Seven take an E27 bulb and the three-arm ceiling lamp takes three E14 bulbs. The ratings run from an 11 W LED on the Melt pendant to 100 W on the Artichoke lamp, and both PH 5 sizes name a golf ball bulb.

Plan the dimmer separately. All eight are listed as dimmable, and all eight say the dimming device is not included. Choose a dimmer and a dimmable bulb that work together.

Tell the electrician the weight. The specification gives the weight of each pendant, from 1 kg for the PH 5 Mini and the Flower Pot Lamp to 11 kg for the three-arm ceiling lamp.

Which pendant suits which spot?

The product pages suggest where several of these pendants work best.

Over a dining table. The PH 5 pendant page describes it as giving balanced, glare-free light for a dining table, and the PH 5 Mini page suggests it for dining or kitchen areas. Both sit in the Poul Henningsen collection, alongside the Artichoke lamp.

In an open living or dining room. The Bubble lamp page describes its diffused glow for open dining and living areas. See the rest of the range in the George Nelson collection.

Across a large room. The three-arm ceiling lamp's page says its wide reach lights large living and dining rooms, and its shades turn to direct the light. It is part of the Serge Mouille collection.

In a group. The Beat pendant page suggests hanging several together for a stronger effect. At 18 cm across, the tall version has the narrowest shade in the table.

Some hanging shades, including the Artichoke lamp and both PH 5 sizes, are filed under ceiling lights on their product pages, so check that page too. For floor, table and wall lamps, go back to the full lighting collection.
