How far from the wall does the light reach?
Wall lamps differ most in how far they carry the light out from the wall. The eight wall lamps compared here from the designer lighting collection fall into three groups, and each group needs a different measurement before you order.
Compact heads stay close to the wall
Three of the eight keep the light within 30 cm of the wall. The AJ style wall lamp has a shade 24.7 cm deep on a 9 cm back plate, and weighs 0.9 kg. The BL7 style wall lamp, credited to Robert Dudley Best, measures 15 by 15 cm and stands 36 cm high. The Beat Wall Light is 30 cm deep, with an 18 cm shade.
A single swing arm carries it further
Three hold the light out on one long arm. The Sconce 1 Rotating Arm spans up to 99 cm and stands 40 cm high. The Potence Wall Lamp page lists 106.5 cm deep and 30 cm high. The 265 Wall Lamp, credited to Paolo Rizzatto, is listed at 155 cm wide and 56 cm deep, with a balancing weight. The Potence and 265 come in medium and large, so check the dimensions for the size you choose.
Two arms span more than a metre
Two of the eight carry two arms, both credited to Serge Mouille. The Serge Mouille two-arm wall lamp is 134 cm wide, 21 cm deep and 75 cm high. The Sconce Wall Light 2 Arms is 182 cm wide and 70 cm high. Both weigh around 5.5 kg, so measure the clear width of wall you have before you order. See more of his lamps on the Serge Mouille page.
What moves, and what stays fixed?
Swing arms and tilting shades let a wall lamp aim its light, and the eight lamps compared here adjust in different ways. Check which parts move before you decide where to fix the lamp.
Arms swing, but their length is fixed
On the Sconce 1 Rotating Arm, the Sconce Wall Light 2 Arms and the Serge Mouille two-arm wall lamp, the specification says the arms swing and the shades adjust, but the arm length cannot be changed. On the two-arm lamp, each arm moves independently. The Potence and 265 wall lamps are listed with an adjustable swing arm, and the 265 has a head that rotates through 360 degrees.
Compact lamps adjust at the shade
The three compact lamps aim their light at the shade instead. The AJ style wall lamp's shade can be tilted to direct the light, and the BL7 style wall lamp's shade can be angled for directional light. The Beat Wall Light's shade pivots, so it can give a focused pool of light or a broader one.
What is a wall sconce?
A sconce is a light fixture fixed to a wall. The word first meant a wall bracket for candles, and it now covers electric wall lights too. Two of the lamps compared on this page use it in their names: the Sconce 1 Rotating Arm and the Sconce Wall Light 2 Arms. Both are swing-arm designs with a moulded aluminium shade on powder-coated metal rods.
Do wall lamps need an electrician?
Check two lines on each product page. All eight lamps compared here list an electric cord with a UK and Euro plug. Seven of the eight also say an electrician is advised or recommended; the AJ style wall lamp arrives assembled. If you want a light without any wiring, browse floor lamps instead, or ask customer support before you order.
Which bulb does a wall lamp take?
It depends on the lamp. The AJ, BL7 and Sconce 1 Rotating Arm take one E14 bulb, and the two two-arm lamps take two E14 bulbs each. The Beat, Potence and 265 wall lamps take one E27 bulb. None of the eight includes a bulb. Recommended wattage runs from 40 W on the AJ, BL7 and Beat to 60 W on the others.
Can these wall lamps be dimmed?
Yes, with a separate device. All eight lamps compared here are listed as dimmable, but in every case the dimmer is an independent device that is not included. Check the Dimmable line in the product specification, buy a dimmer that suits the bulb and fitting, and ask your electrician to fit it if the lamp is wired in.
How heavy are the wall lamps?
They range from under 1 kg to almost 6 kg. The AJ style wall lamp weighs 0.9 kg, the BL7 2 kg, the Beat 2.1 kg and the Sconce 1 Rotating Arm 2.6 kg. The Potence weighs 3 kg and the 265 wall lamp 5 kg. The two two-arm lamps weigh 5.5 kg and 5.65 kg. Check that the wall and fixings can carry the lamp you choose.
Which wall lamps suit reading in bed?
The product pages point to the compact lamps. The BL7 style wall lamp is suggested either side of a bed or sofa where there is no room for a table lamp, and the AJ style wall lamp is described for bedrooms and reading nooks. The 265 wall lamp's page suggests it for desks, studios and reading areas. If there is room on a bedside table, compare the table lamps too.
Who designed these wall lamps?
The product pages credit the AJ style wall lamp to Arne Jacobsen, the BL7 style wall lamp to Robert Dudley Best, the 265 wall lamp to Paolo Rizzatto, and the two-arm lamps and the Sconce 1 Rotating Arm to Serge Mouille. These are reproductions: each page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer or associated parties.
What colours do the wall lamps come in?
Black is by far the most common finish. The grid's colour filter counts 26 lamps in black and 9 in white, with brass, chrome and gold on two each and several other finishes, including blue, cream and black with gold, on one each. Several lamps come in more than one finish, chosen on the product page.
Are the wall lamps in stock?
Some pieces and finishes are held in stock for faster dispatch, and others take longer. Of the eight compared here, the Beat Wall Light shows a faster dispatch line and the other seven show a longer lead time. The grid's Express Delivery filter narrows the list, and each product page shows its current lead time under the Add to Cart button.
How do I clean a wall lamp?
Dust it with a soft, dry cloth, and switch the power off first. The product pages add a few specifics: avoid abrasive cleaners on the AJ style wall lamp and the Beat Wall Light, avoid harsh metal cleaners on the Sconce 1 Rotating Arm's brass, and keep moisture away from the Sconce Wall Light 2 Arms. A microfibre cloth suits the two-arm lamp and the 265 wall lamp.
