One chair, three names
The Wishbone chair, the Y chair and the CH24 are one design. Hans J. Wegner designed it in 1949. The Wishbone and Y names come from the shape of its back, and CH24 is its model number. He developed it from his studies of classical Chinese chairs.
The Wishbone (Y) Chair - CH24 on this page is a replica of that design, sold in 26 versions. Every paper cord version shares one size: 52 cm wide, 53 cm deep and 73 cm high, with a seat about 43 cm from the floor. So the only choice to make is the finish. If you are furnishing a whole table, the dining chair collection has other designs to compare.
Oiled wood, soaped oak, lacquer or stain: choosing a finish
The finish is the one real decision, because the size never changes. The 26 versions fall into six groups.
Finish | Frame | Seat | Versions |
|---|---|---|---|
Natural matt oil | Solid beech, ash or oak | Natural or black paper cord | 6 |
Traditional soaped oak | Solid oak | Natural or black paper cord | 2 |
Special edition | Real walnut backrest on an oiled or soaped oak lower frame | Paper cord | 2 |
Satin lacquer | Beech painted in 12 colours, plus an all-black frame with black cord | Paper cord | 13 |
Walnut stain | Stained wood | Natural or black paper cord | 2 |
Leather seat | Black painted wood | Leather | 1 |
One point is easy to miss. The walnut stain versions have the colour of walnut, but the frame is stained, not walnut. The only real walnut in the range is the backrest of the two special editions.
The black cord changes the look more than the wood does. It comes with the oiled, soaped and stained frames, and with the all-black lacquered chair. The other lacquer colours come with natural cord.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between oak and soaped oak?
Both are solid oak. The oak version has a natural matt oil finish, and the soaped oak version a traditional soaped finish. Their care lines differ: the oiled oak lists dusting, spot cleaning and oil, while the soaped oak lists dusting and a damp cloth, and asks you to follow its care guide. Both come with natural or black paper cord.
How is the leather-seat version different?
It has a leather seat in place of the woven paper cord, on a black painted wood frame. It is slightly larger, at 54 cm wide, 54 cm deep and 77 cm high, and its seat sits about 46 cm from the floor, around 3 cm higher than the paper cord versions. It weighs 7 kg.
Does the chair arrive assembled?
Yes. Every version arrives fully assembled, so there is nothing to put together. A paper cord chair weighs about 7.5 kg and ships in a box 54 by 57 cm and 77 cm high. If you are ordering a set, check that your doorways and stairs suit the boxes before they arrive.
How do I care for the chair?
Each product page lists its own care line. The oiled and lacquered versions list dusting, spot cleaning and oil. The soaped oak and the two special editions list dusting and a damp cloth. The leather-seat version lists dusting and spot cleaning. Check the line for the finish you choose, as it differs between versions.
Is there a matching bar stool?
Yes. The Wishbone (Y) Barstool is 105 cm high with a seat about 74 cm from the floor, and weighs 9 kg. It comes in ten versions, from ash, beech, oak and walnut to lacquered colours. It arrives fully assembled. You can compare it with other designs in the bar stool collection.
Is there a seat cushion for the chair?
Yes. A leather seat cushion is made for this chair, 48.5 by 38.5 cm and 3.5 cm thick. It is semi-aniline Italian leather on top with a non-slip fabric underside, in beige, black, mocha, tan or white. It is sold without the chair, in the accessories collection.
Are any versions held in stock?
Some versions are held in stock for faster dispatch, including several oiled, soaped and lacquered finishes and both special editions. Each product page shows its current lead time under the Add to Cart button, and it can change with the finish you choose, so check the version you want before you order.
Who designed the Wishbone chair?
The product pages credit the design to Hans J. Wegner. This chair is a reproduction: each product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer or associated parties. Customer support can answer questions about a specific version before you order.
