Modern Dining Tables

A dining table is the most structurally demanding piece of furniture in a home. It must seat four to eight people comfortably — 60 cm per person as a minimum, 70 cm for comfort — while remaining visually balanced at a height of 74–76 cm. And unlike a sofa or a chair, it is difficult to hide: a...

Which dining table size and shape suits your room?

Start with the shape of your room, then the number of people you seat most often. The nine dining tables in this collection come in four shapes: six round tops from 90 to 140 cm across, one square, one rectangle and one oval.

For four people. The Tulip round table's product page says its 121.5 cm top fits four chairs comfortably. The 90 cm and 102 cm round tops are smaller again, and the Cyclone's product page presents it for casual dining.

For six or more. The Tulip oval table seats six to eight, depending on chair size, according to its product page. At 196 by 121.5 cm it is the largest top here. The 137 cm and 140 cm round tables give no seat count on their pages, so measure your chairs and ask customer support before you order.

For a wall or a narrow room. The square and rectangular Swag Leg tables are the only straight-edged tops in the collection, so they are the ones that sit flush against a wall.

Check the height against your chairs. Five tables stand 72 cm high, the Bellows table 74.5 cm and the Swag Leg tables 76 cm. That 4 cm spread matters when you pair a table with chairs you already own, so compare it with their seat height. Browse our dining chairs to plan the set together.

Pedestal base or four legs: what changes?

Six of the nine tables stand on a single central base. The other three, the Swag Leg tables, stand on four legs. The choice changes how you seat people, how you move the table and how much fitting it needs.

A central base leaves the edge clear. With no legs at the corners, chairs can go anywhere around the top. On the oval pedestal table, for example, the product page gives six to eight chairs, depending on their size.

Pedestal tables are much heavier. The Platner table weighs 93 kg and the Bellows table 90 kg across its base and top, while the round Tulip table weighs 26 kg and the Cyclone 34 kg. The four-legged tables weigh 12 to 19.5 kg. Plan for help on delivery day, and measure doorways and stairs before you choose one of the heavy glass tables.

Fitting is simplest on four legs. The four-legged tables need only their feet fitting. The Tulip and Bellows tables list top-to-base assembly, and the Platner lists placing a heavy glass top on its base.

Four legs also suit work. Their specifications list commercial as well as residential use, and the square table's product page suggests it as a work table. For larger meeting rooms, see our conference tables.
