Designer Side Tables

Side tables work hard and rarely receive credit. Positioned beside a sofa, an armchair, or a bed, they need to sit at the right height — typically 55–65 cm, or flush with the sofa arm — while remaining visually unobtrusive enough not to interrupt the arrangement they serve. The best designs achieve...

Which side table height do you need?

Measure the arm of your sofa or chair, or the top of your mattress, and compare it with the heights below. On the first page of this grid, the tables made for the side of a seat stand 46.5 to 64 cm high, and one adjusts from 64 to 105 cm.

Check the height, not the size label. The two Calibre tables share a 32 cm round top, but the one sold as medium stands 52 cm and the one sold as small stands 64 cm.

One table adjusts. The E1027 rises from 64 to 105 cm on a polished stainless steel frame, and its product page suggests it for bedside or sofa-side use.

Some tables here sit lower. Eight tables on the first page stand 36 to 42 cm, the height of a table in front of a sofa, and the Eames LTR stands just 25.5 cm. If that is the table you need, browse our coffee tables.

Light to move, or made to stay put?

A side table is often moved from sofa to chair to bed, so weight and fitting matter.

The lightest pieces. The small Around table weighs 3.5 kg, arrives fully assembled, and its product page says one person can move it easily. The Bell side table and the Bliss table weigh 5 kg, and the E1027 5.5 kg.

Fitting. The small table above and the Eames LTR arrive fully assembled. The E1027 needs its glass placing on the base, the marble pedestal table needs its top fixing to the base, and the Bell and Bliss tables list moderate assembly.

Steady on any floor. The LTR's product page says its cross-leg base stays firm on most surfaces, and the Around table's page suggests felt pads for uneven floors.

Care by material. Wipe marble with a mild, pH-balanced cleaner and dry it after use. Clean glass with a glass cleaner and polish chrome with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe veneer and fibreglass with a soft, damp cloth and dry it.
