Who was Christian Dell?
Christian Dell (1893 to 1974) was a German silversmith and lamp designer, born in Offenbach am Main. He trained as a silversmith in Hanau, and from 1922 to 1925 he ran the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar as its foreman. See more Bauhaus furniture.
From 1926 he led the metal workshop at the Frankfurt art school, where he began designing lamps, and he was an early user of Bakelite and other plastics. The Nazis forced him out of the school in 1933. His best-known desk lamps date from the 1930s, and after the war he ran a jewellery shop in Wiesbaden from 1948 to 1955.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Christian Dell?
Christian Dell (1893 to 1974) was a German silversmith and lamp designer from Offenbach am Main. He ran the Bauhaus metal workshop in Weimar from 1922 to 1925, then led the metal workshop at the Frankfurt art school from 1926, where he began designing lamps. His best-known desk lamps date from the 1930s.
Was Christian Dell part of the Bauhaus?
Yes. From 1922 to 1925 he was the foreman of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar, the school's workshop for metal objects. He had trained as a silversmith before that. After the Weimar Bauhaus period he moved to Frankfurt, where his lamp design career began in 1926.
What is a Christian Dell style lamp?
It is a reproduction of one of his adjustable lamp designs. It is sold as a reproduction, and every Mobelaris product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer. The collection holds three lamps, two table lamps and a floor lamp, from GBP 114.50.
How big is the Christian Dell table lamp?
The table lamp is 29 cm wide, 29 cm deep and 43 cm high, and weighs 4 kg. The shade adjusts to direct the light. Both table lamps in the collection share these dimensions: the black version starts from GBP 114.50 and the black and brass version from GBP 134.50.
What is the difference between the two table lamps?
The finish and the price. The black table lamp is made of copper and carbon steel, from GBP 114.50. The black and brass version has a brushed brass finish on carbon steel, from GBP 134.50. Both are 43 cm high, weigh 4 kg, take one E27 bulb and list a two-year warranty.
Is there a Christian Dell floor lamp?
Yes. The floor lamp is 21 cm across at the base and adjusts from 125 cm to 135 cm high. It is lacquered metal, weighs 2.95 kg and takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W. Its product page suggests it as a reading light. It starts from GBP 174.50.
What bulb do the lamps take?
Each lamp takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W, according to its product page. Bulbs are not included, so order them separately. Because all three lamps use the same fitting, one type of bulb covers the whole collection, which keeps spares simple if you buy a table lamp and a floor lamp together.
Will the lamps work with UK sockets?
Yes. Each product page states that the lamp comes with both a UK plug and a Euro plug, so it can be used in the UK or in mainland Europe without an adapter. No assembly is required: the lamps arrive ready to use, with instructions included.
How long is delivery?
All three lamps take 12 to 16 weeks, according to their product pages, and the floor lamp page also shows an express delivery option. Each product page shows its own estimate under the Add to Cart button, and timings are confirmed by email once the order is placed.
What warranty do the lamps have?
Each of the three lamps lists a two-year warranty on its product page. The table lamps and the floor lamp share the same warranty term, so a matching set is covered for the same period. Check the product page for the full terms before ordering.
