Juha Ilmari Leiviskä Design — Finnish Modernist Furniture

Juha Ilmari Leiviskä is Finland's most significant living architect — his churches and public buildings use natural light with a mastery that invites comparison with Alvar Aalto — but his furniture and interior design work shares the same formal intelligence: a preference for warm natural materials,...

Who was Juha Leiviskä?

Juha Leiviskä (1936 to 2023) was a Finnish architect and designer, born in Helsinki. He is known above all for churches and parish buildings, among them Myyrmäki Church in Vantaa, completed in 1984, and he ran an architectural practice in Helsinki with Vilhelm Helander. He received the Carlsberg Architecture Prize in 1995 and the Daylight Award in 2020.

Light was at the centre of his work, and lamps were part of it. He designed light fittings for his own buildings, and he said they were based on the principles Poul Henningsen developed for his layered lamps, which shield the bulb and reflect the light so it is not harsh or glaring. See the Poul Henningsen collection for lamps in that tradition.

He designed the hanging lamp behind this collection, the JL341, in 1969. The table and floor lamps here carry the same kind of shade on a stand.

One shade in four sizes and heights

All four lamps here have a white-finished aluminium shade, take one E27 bulb (60 W recommended, not included), need basic assembly and come in white only. What separates them is the size of the shade and how high the light sits.

Three of the four share a 43 cm shade. The smaller hanging lamp, the table lamp and the floor lamp all list a 43 cm diameter, so the shade is the same width whether it hangs, sits on a surface or stands. The choice between them comes down to height: 21.5 cm for the hanging shade alone, 62 cm on the table base and 177 cm on the floor stand.

The larger hanging lamp is the same lamp, scaled up. At 57 cm across it is 14 cm wider than the others, and it weighs 4.2 kg against 2.7 kg for the 43 cm version. Its product page otherwise lists the same materials, bulb and assembly. Compare both with other pendant lights.

The table lamp needs a generous surface. Its shade is 43 cm across on a lamp 62 cm tall, so it overhangs any side table or desk narrower than that. Measure the top before ordering, and see more table lamps.

The floor lamp arrives in two boxes. It stands 177 cm tall, and its product page lists two packages of 7.5 kg and 3.1 kg. Like the table lamp, it plugs in and has its switch on the cable. Browse more floor lamps.
