Who was Grant Featherston?
Grant Featherston (1922 to 1995) was an Australian furniture designer, born in Geelong, Victoria, and largely self-taught. He designed lighting and glass panels, served in the army during the Second World War, and in 1951 produced the first of his Contour chairs, built on a curved plywood shell.
In 1955 one of those chairs became the first piece of Australian industrial design acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria. From the mid-1960s he worked in partnership with the interior designer Mary Featherston.
