2-Seat Sofas — Compact Designer Sofas for Smaller Rooms

A two-seat sofa is the most versatile piece in any living room — compact enough for a flat or a secondary sitting area, substantial enough to anchor a full-sized room when paired with armchairs or ottomans. Mid-century designers created two-seat sofas that solved this challenge with characteristic...

2 seater sofas at a glance

Two-seaters that look alike on screen can differ by 36.5 cm in depth and 8.5 cm in seat height. The table compares the first eight pieces in the grid, from their product pages. Several of those pages describe their sofa as mid-century in style; the two LC2 pieces are described as modernist. For larger rooms, see the 3-seat sofas, or browse the whole sofa collection.

How the frame shapes a two-seater

The way a 2 seater sofa is built decides how deep it is, how high you sit and how heavy it is to move. The eight pieces above fall into four types.

Foam sofas sit lowest and take the most floor

The two Comfort Style 2-seaters are built entirely from polyurethane foam, with no frame listed. They are 100 to 101 cm deep, which is 18 cm more than the deepest framed piece and 36.5 cm more than the Swan Sofa. Their seats, at 35 and 38 cm, are 4.5 to 8.5 cm lower than the framed sofas with a listed seat height.

Steel frames keep the outline slim

The two LC2 pieces sit inside a polished stainless steel frame, 70 cm deep and 68 to 70 cm high. The LC2 Style 2 Seater has the lowest back here, at 68 cm, and the LC2 Style Petit is the lightest piece at 24 kg. Steel is not always light: the sofa on a stainless steel base also has a wood inner frame and is the widest and heaviest, at 159 cm and 57.8 kg. More LC2 pieces are on the Le Corbusier page.

Timber frames lift the seat

The GE 290 Plank Loveseat has an American ash frame and the Poet 2 Seater Sofa an American walnut one. Both seat you at 42.5 cm, are 82 to 83 cm deep and come in wool. The Poet has the tallest back here, at 87.5 cm. See the Hans J. Wegner and Finn Juhl pages for more by their designers.

A moulded shell is the shallowest

The Swan Sofa wraps foam over a reinforced fibreglass shell on cast aluminium legs. At 64.5 cm it is the shallowest piece compared here, so it takes the least floor depth of the eight.

Two listings of one design can differ

Check the specification of the exact listing you order. The two Comfort Style 2-seaters weigh 32 and 50 kg and seat you at 38 and 35 cm. The two LC2 pieces weigh 24 and 32 kg. The grid shows them as separate products, each with its own dimensions.
