Who was Wilhelm Wagenfeld?
Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900 to 1990) was a German industrial designer, born in Bremen. In 1923 he joined the Bauhaus in Weimar and trained in its metal workshop under László Moholy-Nagy, where Christian Dell was the workshop foreman.
The table lamp he developed there with Carl Jakob Jucker was first made in the workshop in 1924, and it is still widely known as the Bauhaus lamp. Wagenfeld went on to become one of the best-known German industrial designers of his time. He died in Stuttgart in 1990. See more Bauhaus furniture.
Metal base or glass base?
The Bauhaus lamp was made in two versions from the start: one with a metal base and one with a glass base. Both share the opal glass dome. On the globe lamp in this collection, the product page describes the opalescent shade as giving a glowing, diffused light.
The two are usually told apart by their model codes. WA24 is the metal version and WG24 the glass version, and the Mobelaris product page names the glass-base design. The W24 Style Globe Lamp here follows it: a polished stainless steel stem on a round base of thick glass, under a white opaque glass shade.
Globe shade or fabric shade?
The compact lamp. The W24 Style Globe Lamp is 18 cm across and 36 cm high, and weighs 3 kg. It needs no assembly, its product page suggests it for desks and side tables, and it is the lower-priced lamp, from GBP 109.50.
The larger lamp. The WG28 Style Table Lamp has a 44 cm fabric shade and stands 51 cm high, at 5 kg. For GBP 55.00 more, it is 26 cm wider across the shade and 15 cm taller. It needs basic assembly and comes with both UK and Euro plugs.
If you need it soon. This is the biggest practical difference. The WG28 Style Table Lamp shows dispatch in 48 to 72 hours, while the globe lamp shows 12 to 16 weeks. For more designs, browse all table lamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Wilhelm Wagenfeld?
Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900 to 1990) was a German industrial designer from Bremen. He joined the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1923 and trained in its metal workshop, where he developed the table lamp now known as the Bauhaus lamp. He later became one of the best-known German industrial designers of his time, and died in Stuttgart in 1990.
What is the Bauhaus lamp?
It is the table lamp Wagenfeld developed with Carl Jakob Jucker in the Bauhaus metal workshop in Weimar, first made in 1924. It has an opal glass dome on a straight stem over a round base, with no decoration. The nickname is widely used, including in the collection record at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
What is the difference between the metal and glass versions?
The 1924 lamp was made with either a metal base or a glass base, and both versions are still sold today. WA24 is the code for the metal version and WG24 for the glass version. The W24 Style Globe Lamp in this collection follows the glass-base design, with a polished stainless steel stem and a thick glass base.
What is a Wagenfeld style lamp?
It is a reproduction of one of his lamp designs. It is sold as a reproduction, and every Mobelaris product page states that the item is not manufactured by or affiliated with the original designer. This collection holds two lamps, a glass globe lamp and a fabric-shade lamp, from GBP 109.50.
How big is the globe lamp?
The W24 Style Globe Lamp is 18 cm in diameter and 36 cm high, and weighs 3 kg. The shade is white opaque glass, and the lamp arrives ready to use, with no assembly required. Its product page suggests it for desks and side tables, and it starts from GBP 109.50.
How big is the fabric-shade lamp?
The WG28 Style Table Lamp has a 44 cm shade and stands 51 cm high, and weighs 5 kg. The body is glass and aluminium, the shade is a heat-resistant fabric and the base is glass. It needs basic assembly, comes with UK and Euro plugs, and starts from GBP 164.50.
What bulb do the lamps take?
Each lamp takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W, according to its product page. Bulbs are not included with either lamp, so order them separately. Because both lamps use the same fitting, one type of bulb covers the whole collection, which keeps spares simple if you buy both.
Do the lamps need assembling?
The globe lamp needs none: its product page lists no assembly required, with instructions included. The WG28 Style Table Lamp needs basic assembly, and its instructions are included too. Neither lamp page lists special tools. Only the WG28 Style Table Lamp page lists its plugs, UK and Euro, so check the globe lamp page before ordering.
How long is delivery?
It depends on the lamp. The WG28 Style Table Lamp shows dispatch in 48 to 72 hours, while the W24 Style Globe Lamp shows delivery in 12 to 16 weeks. Each product page shows its own estimate under the Add to Cart button, and timings are confirmed by email once the order is placed.
What warranty do the lamps have?
Both lamps list a two-year warranty in their product specifications. The globe lamp and the fabric-shade lamp share the same term, so a pair bought together is covered for the same period. Check the product page for the full terms before ordering.
